"Believe [in Catholicism], do what you can, admit that you're basically a bastard, and turn to the font of infinite Mercy as humbly and as often as you can. If there's one thing that's incompatible with Christianity, it's pride, or what we today would call 'healthy self-esteem' and a 'clear conscience.'"

VIDEO: Fr. Jonathan Morris talks aliens, holy water on Fox's "Red Eye"
Greg: "Whenever you have plans to do something as a priest, do you ever speed up mass just so you can get home?"
Fr. Jonathan: "Yes."
Aside from "Lost," this is totally my favorite show on TV.
AUDIO: U.S. Bishops fund groups "undermining Catholic values" and "working in opposition to Catholic teaching"
From the 11/13/09 edition of The World Over: Interview with Michael Hichborn from the American Life League and Rob Gasper from Bellarmine Veritas Ministry about recent criticisms of groups funded by the U.S. Bishops’ Catholic Campaign For Human Development.
ReformCCHDNow.com is calling for a boycott of next Sunday's second collection for the CCHD.
Will be home in CA in two weeks. Family and friends:Please prepare awkward priest/celibacy questions in advance.
I'M GOING BACK TO CALI... CALI... CALI... I haven't been back home to California since I moved here to Texas in July of last year to join the religious order. I'm really looking forward to seeing my family and friends (and, also, RELAXING) for five weeks! I'm scheduled to start my Novitiate year when I get back to San Antonio after Christmas. Please pray for me and, if yous see me in California, don't be surprised if I pick your brain to help me think about my future. Can't wait to be home!
Other unrelated musings:
JUST WRONG As embarrassing and unmanly as it may be, I have to say that Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi is my favorite song right now. It’s actually pretty sad if you pay attention -- both the lyrics and the fact that I like the song. ("Chase you down until you love me." Tried that before. Doesn’t work.) Wow, the next thing you know, I'll be reading Twilight...
I'M READING TWILIGHT I never had any interest in seeing the movie. It may have a lot to do with the fact that I’m not a 13 year-old girl. And now I, a guy who usually doesn’t have the attention span to watch a YouTube video longer than two minutes, am reading the book. (I’m half-way through the first book.) A female friend of mine suggested that guys should read Twilight to learn about what girls want in a man. What I’ve learned: Girls want a man who is pale, can lift vans with ease, and only drinks animal blood.
PLANNED PARENTHOOD DIRECTOR QUITS AFTER SEEING ABORTION ULTRA-SOUND This is a powerful story out of Texas which has received national news coverage in the last few days. Abby Johnson, who was the director of a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic, resigned her position after a disturbing experience of seeing an ultrasound of an abortion procedure. Abby now joins the 40 Days For Life prayer warriors who demonstrate in front of the clinic she used to run. She was interviewed last week on "Catholic Connection" with Teresa Tomeo, and revealed some disturbing details about her work at Planned Parenthood, including the pressure she received from higher-ups in the organization to push for more abortions to increase profits:
SPIRITURAL WARFARE THURSDAY @ BLUE STAR BREWING COMPANY If you’re here in San Antonio, be sure to make it out to the last Theology on Tap session for this season Thursday night at Blue Star! Martha Fernandez-Sardina, the director of the Office for Evangelization for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, will be the guest speaker.
Planned Parenthood director leaves, has change of heart
A director of a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Texas has quit:
Planned Parenthood has been a part of Abby Johnson's life for the past eight years; that is until last month, when Abby resigned. Johnson said she realized she wanted to leave, after watching an ultrasound of an abortion procedure.
"I just thought I can't do this anymore, and it was just like a flash that hit me and I thought that's it," said Jonhson.
According to Johnson, the non-profit was struggling under the weight of a tough economy, and changing it's business model from one that pushed prevention, to one that focused on abortion.
"It seemed like maybe that's not what a lot of people were believing any more because that's not where the money was. The money wasn't in family planning, the money wasn't in prevention, the money was in abortion and so I had a problem with that," said Johnson.
Those of us who support the cause of life should all pray a prayer of thanksgiving for Abby Johnson's decision to leave the abortion clinic.
During this "Year of The Priest" in the Catholic Church, we here at the priest house have been reading a quote every night before dinner from St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests.
VIDEO: CNN defends Obama against big, bad, mean SNL skit
Ok, I'm going to try really, really hard to avoid sarcasm or cynicism. But I really can't imagine CNN ever going out of their way to "fact-check" a Saturday Night Live spoof about President Bush.
Anyone else notice Facebook ads becoming more provacative?
Hopefully it won't keep getting worse and worse like Myspace. I wouldn't say I'm offended, but those advertisements aren't very helpful to my celibacy cause.
I've been told that, if I changed my relationship status to "married," a lot of those kinds of ads disappear.
FREE Catholic/Protestant/Evangelical unity conference at Abundant Life Church in San Antonio, Oct. 2-4
In certain special circumstances, such as the prescribed prayers "for unity," and during ecumenical gatherings, it is allowable, indeed desirable that Catholics should join in prayer with their separated brethren. Such prayers in common are certainly an effective means of obtaining the grace of unity, and they are a true expression of the ties which still bind Catholics to their separated brethren. "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them"
My religious community and I will be there this weekend. Last year was the first time this conference took place, and it went pretty well. Hopefully this year will be even better.
